The 85 Weirdest, Day 51: Kool Keith
a.k.a. Dr. Octagon

The 85th anniversary issue of Weird Tales features our big list of “The 85 Weirdest Storytellers of the Past 85 Years.” We’re breaking it down online, too: one honoree per day, in no particular order, for 85 days!

Half the narrative weirdness of KOOL KEITH THORNTON (1964– ) comes from his sophisticated, horror- and science-fiction-themed hip-hop recordings, starting with the pioneering acid-rap album Dr. Octagonecologyst. The other half comes from the multifold tangle of alternate identities he’s created to perform said songcraft. Dr. Octagon becomes Dr. Dooom [sic] becomes Black Elvis becomes The Fourth Horseman — and through it all, Thornton threads an ever-evolving storyline of mad science and mad beats.
