The 85 Weirdest, Day 23: R. Crumb

The March/April 85th anniversary issue of Weird Tales features our big list of “The 85 Weirdest Storytellers of the Past 85 Years.” We’re breaking it down online, too: one honoree per day, in no particular order, for 85 days!

Sure, he’s the comics king of ’60s counterculture, but it’s ROBERT CRUMB’s (1943– )’s trippy jaunts through his unfettered hindbrain that lands him firmly on our list. With devil girls, sexed up cats, exploding heads and more, Crumb’s lowbrow art spills the contents of our animal minds and exposes what most of us are too inhibited to admit. With his landmark anthology Weirdo, Crumb unleashed a whole new cult of weird artists on the world.
