The 85 Weirdest, Day 11: Kara Walker

The March/April 85th anniversary issue of Weird Tales features our big list of “The 85 Weirdest Storytellers of the Past 85 Years.” We’re breaking it down online, too: one honoree per day, in no particular order, for 85 days!

KARA WALKER (1969– ) summons ghosts. They are the opposite of most ghosts you’re accustomed to. Instead of spectral white shades floating in the darkness of night, Walker’s acclaimed art installations present void-black human figures against a background of white emptiness: life-sized silhouettes of the long-deceased, captured in their most obscene, degrading moments of abuse and torment. The topic is racial injustice; the aesthetic is weird through and through.
