While others have claimed more fame, CHARLES FORT (1874-1932) could be the single most important person in the history of weird: an archivist who wrote books filled with strange occurrences culled from newspapers all over the world. Falls of fish, frogs, and blood. Visions of cities floating in the sky — not to mention spaceships soaring through them. But Fort was no paranormal apologist. He rejected all manner of dogma, from Catholics venerating the Virgin to closed-minded scientists who clearly didn’t read the same newspapers he did.
